TF2: Engineer Building Concepts

A Concept for GameBanana

Couple of new Engineer building concepts, based off of buildings the engineer could build in a mod for the original QuakeWorld Team Fortress ( before Team Fortress software was purchased by valve ) called Custom TF. With some modifications. Here's some video's showcasing what both concepts were modeled after if interested: Custom TF done TF2 ( Tesla Coils at the beginning ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwoY27sE7rw Forced Field ( Force Field Generators): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXdDjaZ6ezc The Tesla coil acts like you'd expect. When enemies get into range of the turret it charges up and fires 4-5 shocks of electricity at the target. If possible, I'd like it to also transfer to all nearby enemies to the initial target if possible, dealing 25%-50% less damage to compensate that it doesn't have rockets to deal some splash damage. Doesn't require turning for it to fire, just the enemy to be within it's sight line and in the range. Spy's that can backstab the engineer who built it have enough time while it charges to sap it before taking damage, because honestly spy's have enough crap to deal with lol. Force field generator is actually two separate structures ( it replaces the teleporter entrance and exit ). When placed within a range of one another it creates a force field similar to the medics shield in Mann vs Machine, but blocks all fire, not just the enemies because that would be OP as hell and silly. Excessive fire on the Force Field will temporary shut them down for a little bit of time, which the engie can speed it up by meleeing it ). Someone suggested that a Lv3 version of the shield offer movement speed+ to teammates who run through it, so if possible an indicator on the shield itself that it's Lv3 so people know they get buffed running through it. Sorry for the details, just tossing up the concepts and the idea's behind it. Not sure how needed the specifics were, but I just wanted to toss them out to give an idea of what was running through my mind when I drew these up. Also sorry for the basic drawings, I just wanted to give an idea of what I thought they'd look like if they were made for TF2. A request that the Tesla Coil's melee be a electricity based hammer, as a fun pun towards Thor's Hammer. =P Thanks though for your time. ~Kitt Stargazer

Very good idea ;) The concept really wasn't that hard back in Custom TF days to grasp. Well, outside with dealing with them being in water and having them instant gib anyone who got in, obviously something that wouldn't be emulated if they were put in TF2 lol. The most important thing would be just making sure they're close enough to one another so they can create a connection. Then you would just upgraded them like a normal building.

I really like this. I think Valve has really missed out on sentry customization/alternates. This is definitely something that would bring back some vigor into the TF2 community.

I feel like the forced field needs a bit more detail on the concept art part.

    > **Posted by PJX** > > The concept seems interesting. The sentry replacement could be a bit OP because of its range, newer players wouldn't know what hit 'em. It might be better to let it charge up until a certain point, and let the coil zap the enemies within range once, depleting its charge, before it starts charging up again (approx. 10 - 15 sec?). > > For the forcefield, that'd be a nice idea seeing ingame (maybe the field should have like 250 HP and each collumn about 300 HP to make it more likely a player attacks the shield first) It really just depends on how powerful it is honestly. The ones in custom tf were cute to look at. But I recall them being inferior to stock sentries due to them killing things slowly. I was thinking it does have a charging up at the start and every round of shots sequence though. Sort of like how the Tesla Coils work in Red Alert. But the sentry needs to kill people about as fast as a Lv3 sentry does or no one will garunteely use it over a stock sentry. Maybe make the initial hit do a little less damage depending on how many nearby teammates also get hit? Also could have less health then a stock sentry due to it being a more flimsier design turret to it as well, making it easier to destroy. I also want to add I don't see pubs or "newer players" as a reliable source of information as to wither something is OP or not. Mainly due to the fact that even very basic means of attacking and even crap weapons can be used and dominate them. For the turret to function well in a good gaming environment it needs to reasonably functional when compared to a standard sentry for it to be considered even worth using IMO. If we went by newer player standards or pub standards it probably wouldn't even compare to the mini sentries. If it has to be upgraded no one would touch it with a 10 foot pole. Actually, original in custom TF you could upgrade the gun stats individually so you could customize them originally. The stats were Damage, Range and health I believe and each Lv1 allowed you to put down 3 upgrades total, allowing you to upgrade it 9 times over all. Each stat could be raised a total of 9 times. So you could have a standard turret that had 3 damage, 3 range and 3 health. I think it's a bit neat, but a bit overkill and complicated over all. Also, then the last thing I could toss up is would it function with the wrangler? Maybe withen it's firing range. But the further it goes the less damage it does perhaps? Also, I want to add the shields would be a PDA slot item while the turret be a melee slot item for obvious reasons. A request that the Tesla Coil's melee be a electricity based hammer, as a fun pun towards Thor's Hammer. =P

The force field idea seems interesting. Tesla seems a bit OP in my opinion.
