Section Migration Complete
- A Blog Post for GameBanana
The mass merging of sections has been completed. Now Skins, Maps, Gamefiles, Effects, GUIs, Textures, Prefabs, Castaways & Craftings all belong to the same Mods sections.
Other sections have not been ruled out of also being merged however the remaining sections like Sounds, Sprays and Scripts have unique fields that provide issues and so for now they will stay separate.
As a reminder this allows us to be able to do things we simply couldn't do before. Such as rename top level sections depending on the game (e.g Maps are called Stages in Smash games) and move submissions between sections which was formerly impossible (e.g you could not move a GUI to the Effects section without trashing and re-uploading - but now you are able to).
Now comes a lot of category reorganisation on a game by game basis. With the help of some new admin tools from tom and the Game Managers providing feedback on their specific games we plan to tidy up and reorganise some of the categories that might currently look a bit messy right now.
Also as previous sections are now categories which makes them one level deeper that they used to be, we have added the top level category as an icon and in the tooltip on the homepage and game pages.
Last but not least there have been lots of little fixes related to things connected to the old section, including some search issues and member and studio lists.
This change will take some getting used to but I believe it was a long overdue change - we put it off for so long. But already there are big advantages - every day we were trashing submissions because they couldn't be simply moved between sections - this angered or confused countless submitters. And every day new users to games like Smash and many others would be faced with unfamiliar terms like "Maps", when they were looking for Stages.
One of the initial shortcomings of the merge is it was not possible to determine the type of mod, e.g was it a map/stage/level or was it a skin - this is now possible as the root category and icon are shown in the submission preview on the homepage and game section - hopefully this will help a lot.
