Today and yesterday we made a couple of critical changes. They were more decisions than actual implementations:
Ads have been disabled for logged in members. This is just a test, maybe for a month or so. If ads come back, there will be far fewer for members. If we do drop ads entirely, the no-ad unlock will be refunded.
The SPA (Single Page App) technology, which is the cornerstone of the new UI (where the nav stays and the content changes) has been disabled for guests. This should reduce technical issues for guests, especially those on obscure browsers. Only members will get the SPA functionality now, which makes sense since the SPA functions are only needed for members (alerts, activity, chat [soon]).
Other, minor tweaks:
The profile stats module has been overhauled.
We made a big change to our crawlers index our pages and revived our gigantic automated XML sitemap.
In other news, I have been reaching out to some discord communities to understand where GB has screwed up. It's something I really need to get into the habit of. A couple of key concerns of the folks on the Celeste discord, which we will probably implement, are:
Make submitter-useful unlocks free (e.g table of contents, blocker), as they are important functionalities for anyone whether they are new or a veteran who can afford them.
Make the Quick DL free - people do not like having to click Manual Download. That was always the point, but times are changing and we should probably just make it as convenient as possible.
So many of the suggestions focused on unlocks. If we do make them free, people will get point refunds. And then we'll have to think of some other things that should be unlocks, because as this rate we will be losing a lot of them.
The reason this UI seems more screwed than the previous versions is the new Sidenav looks, and position ( this one is on mobile ). On previous versions there was a way to make the site look like previous versions using Browsing Uberstyle. But this one will never make it look exactly like the old ones because of SideNav. ( All previous looks had the same Nav ). But this new UI it has alot of new features never existed on the previos GB versions which is a good point. For example the Real-time alerts are a great feature we needed specially for member mods. And the UI themes feature, it's a seriously great feature on the site as it allows you to edit the site and try to make some of the looks you want. Other features this new UI has, it's a great thing. Keep up.
When are we getting the front page filters back? I can't follow what I wanna follow anymore because its scrambled into a wall of stuff for games I've never even heard of.
Btw how is this no-ads thing going to work? Last I checked you can't keep a site hosted on love alone in this greedy capitalist society. If you could no site would have ads in the first place other than to pocket the cash (which many probably do anyway, but that's aside the point).
