Building myself VERY cheap gaming PC

A Blog Post for GameBanana

This story begins one year ago, when my Acer laptop died because of the age. Since that time I was using another pretty old computer for long period, but now I decided to build new one. For now I have few big problems in configuring my new computer:

  • Living in Russia(when rouble was devalued because of cheap oil, prices on a lot of things including PC hardware automatically multiplied by 2.2x);
  • Big variety of hardware(AMD or Intel??? AMD or Nvidia??? ATX or mATX??? and so on).

My goal is ability to play GTA V or any other modern games on stable 40-60 fps with ANY graphics settings, at least on 720p. My budget is very low, it's a lot of money for me personally but it's just $400 for the rest of the world. Any ideas? Maybe someone already built this kind of computer for same purposes?

Ok good. This is the list of what I decided to buy after reading your listings and analyzing hardware prices in my local stores:

    • CPU - AMD FX6300
    • MB - ASUS M5A97 LE
    • RAM - Crucial CT102464BA160B 8GBx1
    • GPU - Palit GTX 750 Ti StormX OC
    • Power supply - AeroCool VX-550 550W

It's not final list, I can change it in future.

You're a game artist. You want 8gb of ram. You want a decent CPU and an even better GPU. You can't cheap out on your components. Here is my setup for you. It comes out about $50 over budget but could be edited.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor $97.88 @ OutletPC
Motherboard MSI 970 GAMING ATX AM3+ Motherboard $95.88 @ OutletPC
    Memory G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory $39.98 @ OutletPC
Video Card EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB SuperSC ACX 2.0+ Video Card $189.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply $39.99 @ Amazon

    Total $463.72

I did not cheap out on the motherboard like others did because it is a horrible idea. Trust me, I have built many computers with under $70 boards and it is a nightmare sometimes. This one will do nicely.

I chose a decent power supply that should somewhat future proof you. If you plan on adding SLI later on, we might have to pack in a bit more wattage there.

8GB of ram of course. Trying to use 3dsmax, marmoset, and photoshop at the same time without 8gb of ram...good luck lol.

Lastly, one beast of a gpu with a decent cpu to back it up. I would suggest the 6300 for you since 3dsmax can utelise all 6 of those cores. The GPU will assist it quite well. It can play GTA at max as well ^^

You want it your PC for games ,right?
    - You should buy a great graphic card the other parts like processor and ram doesn't make that big different in game.

    My suggestion :

    - Graphic card: GTX 750 Ti 2GB (don't buy 1 GB .... you can't play GTA V like humans with 1GB)

    - Processor: AMD fx 6300 or i3 (Choose the cheaper one because both are the same)

    - Ram : 8GB or 4GB (4GB is enough for games)

    - Power supply: 450W or higher ,don't choose less than that or you'll explode your PC.

    - Harddisk: choose the size that you want it doesn't matter.

    - Motherboard : buy a normal one that could make all those things above together.(not cheap or expensive)

    If you're asking : Can I play GTA V on it ?
yeah! you can play it on high settings not "ULTRA".

I don't know what the pricing for this is in Russia or if it's even available there in the first place, but for my computer case, this is what I personally use. Caveat in that I got it during a discounted sale, but it's still a very good case in my opinion, as it's not overly fancy with a bunch of overpriced, useless features: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146075

Alternate version, with a clear side panel window instead, though it's slightly more expensive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146102

Edit: Didn't notice you already said you had a case already, whoops. In that case, as far as the power supply unit is concerned, do you have any idea what wattage you want for it based on the other parts you have planned? I can try to help narrow it down from there.

You don't need a 4-series intel cpu to run games. You should check if you can find a used previous gen i7 instead. I'm running a 2700k, and have no issues with any games.

Your GPU will be much more important in rendering, so I recommend you spend less on the CPU, and get more VRAM :)

Unfortuanely I can't afford myself any intel core iX CPU. Even old-gen models are very expensive here. Buying hardware on ebay, or amazon, etc. automatically means at least month of waiting for the package to arrive. I really like Intel CPUs, but they are way too expensive these days.
    By all means.

    Check mine too:

    • Intel Core i3-4170 BOX 118$
    • ASRock H81M 58$
    • Palit GTX 750 Ti StormX 133$
    • 4GB Crucial Ballistix 1600 MHz CL9 2x 22$ = 44$
    • Thermaltake TR2 450W 39$

392$ with fine i3 and budget gpu. It should handle GTA V

I dont know prices in Russia, if you said its more expensive then this build will exceed your budget.

Where is your case and HDD? That will cost another $100.
