Armor in Core Decay

Some time ago, I asked Ivar if I could be in charge of designing armor in Core Decay. Many shooters use armored vests or something similar but I wanted to do something different. I always was a huge fan of the armor shards found in Quake II so I already knew which direction I would follow design-wise.

Look and functionality

I tried to think about a way to make them believable and functional in Core Decay's world. It's a futuristic setting so I had some creative freedom to come up with something. Armor shards are a bit abstract in the gaming world so I had to come up with an idea for them to make a little bit of sense.

The idea I had was that the armor shards would somehow be strongly magnetic, allowing the user to attach the shards to the body at any location where it would be deemed necessary, depending on the situation. This would allow the user adjust the amount of armor and make a consideration between protection and mobility. To visually project the armor's treats I added an electromagnetic coil at the back of the armor.

Final result

Before putting the armor shards in the game, Ivar added a beautiful emissive layer as well to further emphasize the object's purpose. I'm really happy with the final result and I definitely look forward to continue my modeling work for Core Decay.
