[TUTORIAL] Menu Photo's

How to create the Menu Photo's seen displayed on the right side of the Map Objective screen on Map Start. For this tutorial you will need to have some basic knowledge of Photoshop. In order for your custom map to have 2 working Menu Photos it needs 2 files in following directory:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\team fortress 2\tf\custom\my\_custom\_photos\materials\vgui\maps
These 2 files are:
menu\_photos\_mapname.vtf
menu\_photos\_mapname.vmt
How to create the .vtf
A. Making a .tga image

C. Transforming the .tga image to a .vtf A. Making a .tga image Step 1:
Take 1, 2 or 3 screenshots of your map depending on how many you want to show. Just make sure they will still look good on a 512x512 tga. (Step 2) Step 2: Photoshop: create tga: - create a 512x512 pixels TGA. - give it a black background - resize your 2 screenshots and paste them in to make something nice. - edit the Alpha channel to make it hide the black background and show the pictures only - Save As... menu\_photos\_mapname.tga (32 bit, uncompressed) Step 3:
Copy and paste your "menu\_photos\_mapname.tga" in following directory: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\team fortress 2\bin II. Vtex Preparation We will create a vtf from the tga using vtex.exe. Let's setup the vtex.exe! Step 4: Go Properties on the vtex.exe shortcut, and add the following 2 parameters behind the Target: -game "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\team fortress 2\tf"
-nop4 III. Transforming the .tga image to a .vtf Step 5: Now drag your tga you created (Step 3) onto the vtex.exe (Step 5). The vtex.exe will create a menu\_photos\_mapname.vtf in the following directory: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\team fortress 2\tf menu\_photos\_mapname.vtf CREATED! -------------------------------------------------------------- -- How to create the .vmt -------------------------------------------------------------- Step 1:
open notepad Step 2:
paste these lines of code in it:
"UnlitGeneric"
{
	"$basetexture" "vgui\maps\menu\_photos\_mapname"
	"$translucent" 1
	"$ignorez" 1
	"$vertexcolor" 1
}
Step 3: Replace 'mapname' in "$basetexture" "vgui\maps\menu\_photos\_mapname" with the name of your custom map. Example: "$basetexture" "vgui\maps\menu\_photos\_ctf\_2fort" Step 4: Save As... menu\_photos\_mapname.vmt menu\\_photos\\_mapname.vmt CREATED!
Place .vtf & .vmt in propper directory
Cut and past your "menu\_photos\_mapname.vtf" and "menu\_photos\_mapname.vmt" in following directory:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\team fortress 2\tf\custom\my\_custom\_photos\materials\vgui\maps If you correctly edited the Alpha Channel of your tga and did all the other Steps like mentioned, your 2 map screens will be displayed on the Objective Screen on Map Start! Cheers! I submitted this, but I did not create it, I found it on tf2maps.net and thought it would be useful here.

    There seems to be a slight issue (I am using Paint Shop Pro X to do this) with the well templates (the ones with the white background) in which it will only show the frames for some reason in game. So if you are having that issue, try another template, other than that, this tutorial is spot on! 10/10! Edit: This tutorial really should be in the mapping section.

    If your map name was cp_hellothere, would the filename for the image be, menu_photo_cp_hellothere ?

    Pros: Its good Cons: i would prefer some example screens as i cant see if the immage you used had 2 photos on it. this could confuse a few as it did in the beginning with me

    This has been submitted under a Studio Release. You cannot release content not created by yourself or members of your studio under a "Studio Release". Studio Rules Page. fixed. On Topic though, All Map makers for TF2 should be using this. Cutting corners looks bad.

    Just as an extra note area for people to see this: I, CC_ArK, did not make this tutorial. I found it on tf2maps.net and thought ti would be useful here. Especially since it works.
