In need of someone that's good with dogs

A Forum Thread for GameBanana

wuff?

I never thought I'd ever be asking this on a website, let lone a FPS website, but since a lot of people have dogs, I might just ask anywhere. And why not here. It seems that my parents are having problem with this tiny dog, it's a maltezer and has been extremely 'shy' and easily scared ever since we got him. Recently he has been acting rather strange, he never dared to ever climb the stirs but if we don't block the stairs he'll be on the first floor every day, he also seems to prefer my parents' bed, this too is odd since he has to jump twice the height of our couch and he's too much of a wimp to jump that. He also started howling/complaining during the night and moving objects about 10 times his own size, scratching on doors, resulting in a marvellous paint job is also a new hobby of his. But one of the more peculiar facts is that he is faking a leg injury. When I came home last week, he was limping on three paws and refused to stand on one of his back paws, we thought he fell down the stairs due to his new climbing hobby but the vet did not find anything at all, we also explained his 'new' behaviour and she couldn't explain it any more than we could. Now the reason why he is faking it is because one day he is absolutely fine, he jumps up and down and runs around, when I look away for a second or go to the bathroom he is limping when I come back. Now you'd expect a dog to be in pain when you handle his paw, but he simply doesn't mind, you can pick him up and even hold/move his leg without even the slightest bit of fear or even anger from his part. So if anyone has any advice, do share. I have a poser dog, I want to get rid of this thing he has.

It sounds like your dog is possessed by a ghost. Most likely a WW2/WW1 soldier. Either that or it's retarded.

Perfectly normal. Dogs often like to sleep near / on wherever their owns sleep, so much so that my dog will actually climb and jump from a perfectly good bench, onto my parent's bed. All the other stuff you mentioned just sounds like he's desperately seeking attention. Little dogs tend to be all bitchey.. How often do you take him on walks?

Six years old, we got him when he was six months old. He started doing this about two weeks ago. We also have a massive back yard, big enough for our dogs to get lost in.

This sounds cruel, but every time he does something that you don't want him to do, grab him by the back of his neck as hard as you can and hold him down on his back and stand over top of him. Make sure he knows you're angry. It may not work the first time but I guarantee you he'll stop if you keep consistent with it. What this does is it shows your dominance over him and eventually he'll submit to you.

He has female companionship. Also, He is usually quite obedient, Everything I tell him to, he does. Now listening to other people is usually another story. I'm the one in the family that is relatively good with dogs but this just blows my mind, I have never seen a dog fake an injury before.

Go to the graveyard and right before you reach the fence there's a path parallel to the graveyard, follow it and then head right. It's one of the new houses that hasn't got a front yard yet...

Did you rescue it from a animal shelter or get it from a home where it was badly treated? If you did then this could all be considered fairly standard behaviour for a dog like that as it would be incredibly stressed and could have been beaten by a previous owner who looked like you, hence why it prefers your parents bed. I have learned all about this because my mum was in the same situation with this small jack russel type thing that she rescued from a really bad home and was a total wreck when she got it, every time it saw a little kid(it had been harassed by little kids in its old home) it would piss itself everywhere. She managed to help it though by taking it to training classes where it could meet other dogs. Its fine now, though. So, I would advis checking the dogs history and finding out about previous owners. That could eaily be the problem.

His past isn't the issue guys, it's his newly found one that is, he's been himself for over six years and out of the blue he does this stuff.

Ah, that clears things up. Something like this happened to some people who live across the road from me, one day they were minding their own business when their dog staarts getting more and more mental. Eventually this culminates in the dog lashing out violently at anything near it. So they took it down the vets to get some tests, and it had a "shadow" on one of its lungs,I belive. If you dont know what a shadow is it is effectively a dark spot on an x-ray that is the precursor to a tumor on the shadowed area. Now I'm not saying your dog has anything like this bbut go down to the vets and ask for some tests abnormalities and stuff. Of course the dog could just be getting old and not a lot can be done about that. Either way, I hope all turns out to be well.

One of m mate's family members had a dog who went crazy because it's owners never paid it any attention, they were rarely in, and it was locked up all day. Just to get things straight everything is as it used to be, i.ee you're treating it the same as always, nothing remotely different has happened recently and it's just started acting weird?

Most of the stuff could be cries for attention, that's the best I can say is not to discipline it (no offense to this suggestion), this will likely stop it doing that stuff but it probably won't have an effect on whatever is causing the behavior in the first place. Its hard but try doubling your attention would be a good way to start. Its not healthy to do this permanently but for about a week (christmas is a good time, holidays etc.) work with your family, organize shifts etc. and double his walks (once a day is minimum), have at least 1 person nearby as much as possible (don't follow if he leaves, you go to him but dogs don't want to spend all their time around you so if they go let them). Let us know the results of this little 1 week trial, did it improve things? Did he carry on with the periodic limping? etc. Don't take no for an answer from your family, you're spending the most time with it but chances are due to any natural family dynamic it probably sees your mother or father as the dominant master hence its tendency to want to sleep there. Make them do it just for one week to make sure its ok.
