Half-Life 2 uses a system called item_dynamic_resupply, which makes sure the player is always filled with ammo and has enough health and battery. While it is an interesting system, one major problem with it is how it breaks the balance of the game.
I have always felt that the Hard difficulty is not hard enough in the right way. This is because the game always makes sure to resupply the player constantly, due to the generous amount of resupply crates scattered around the maps. In order to change this, I decided to completely remove the crates.
Now, the player has to rely purely on the items dropped by enemies and placed manually by the map maker. As a consequence of this, certain ammunition types will be more scarce, and the player will generally have less HP and battery, forcing them to play more carefully. I have already played the whole game with this and It improved the game substantially for me.
The mod only contains empty .mdl and .phys files, which makes the item_item_crates practically impossible to see or interact with.
Side effect : The Lambda Locator Achievement might not be doable with this mod, because some of the caches contain only crates which you must interact with. Further testing required.
This is an interesting idea, however I have yet to see how this will play out in game, so I will test it first. I'm curious to know how the game is balanced, as there are places that will require supplies, given how HL2's combat is a lot more like walking through a mosquito swamp compared to HL1's balanced and fair but challenging gameplay.
