This barrel not only looks good, but it sounds good as well.
model is hands-down better than the default barrel model, and it's even
better than the previous replacement I had been using.
The model has detailed flanges, caps, and rims, and all around looks wonderful:
Model Rating: 10/10
The textures, as shown abouve, are also completely fitting, and look fantastic as well.
The textures use a 2048x2048 texture map, as compared to the default barrel's 512x512 map. They also use a unique UV map, as this is a completely new model:
While this does mean that your favourite barrel textures will not natively work on this model, if you take the time to make them for this new UV map, it will be worth the effort.
I actually looked at the shaders for the barrels, and edited them slightly to see if anything would make it better or worse. Default on left, edit on right:
The shaders as they are now include a diffuse, a bump map, and a phong setting. Even without a detail map, these textures look very fitting, and very nice. A detail map might be able to add more detail to the shader, but overall it performs and looks excellent without it.
Texture Rating: 10/10
The detail on these is superb. Enough said.
Detail Rating: 10/10
As you can see, these look very much like a real-world rusty 55 gallon drum.
The model as it compares to the real-world counterpart, is spot-on.
Realism Rating: 10/10
The add-on, not content to just replace your barrel, and not content to replace the texture as well, also comes with a custom sound replacement. When you pick up the barrel with the Gravity Gun, you can hear sloshing inside of it, which is a great touch. It reminds you that these explosive barrels aren't empty, and that they have something combustible inside that makes them go boom.
Sound Rating: 10/10
As it turns out, this mod had a good deal of thought put into it compared to most other barrel replacements. From the complete model re-work, the brand new textures, and the coup de grâce of the new sounds, this is a must-have mod in my book, and makes any other barrel replacement thus far I have found nowhere near as cool.
It looks good but there's a few small notes I'd like to make
> the red diamond has very sharp edges, as opposed to the original texture where it looks ''painted on'' because the white areas shine through, implying the paint is layered - yours does not have this, making it look somewhat.. synthetic? artificial? Not really finding the right word here but I think my point is clear.
> the white is too bright. Very concise on this one, it's too clean. That goes for the red areas too but more so for the white part. The barrel has quite a bit of wear and grime overall, which makes it quite unreasonable that part of it would still remain so unaffected. It looks nice in your render but in the screenshots it just doesn't come through very well.
