This skin, is a remake of an ancient knife reskin I made about... 2 years ago... yeah...
I decided to randomly pick up some old thing I made back when I was a lil' beginner and I had no knowledge on model hacking/modeling and decided to make it better!
Some people from back then might have seen and recognize the old "Ice Chopper" (or maybe not) as I removed it to leave this one as it's much better than the original.
But for whoever hasn't seen it before, here is a free headache!:
The curve on the top of the model can be improved by using smoothing but you will need to create smoothing groups which is not an easy task. Currently it looks jagged and rough and unrealistic.
On closer inspection, the texture bitmap looks improperly converted into 8 bit format. It looks like you made a skin in 24bpp mode and saved it into 8bpp mode via Paint which leads to color loss. Instead you should use image converting software which can perform such a conversion without any substantial loss of color and preserving the image as it looks originally.
Regarding the texture itself, the blade texture can use with some improvements. Currently it looks like plastic instead of metal. The grip looks really good but blurred. Could add more sharp details over the grip base.
The original knife model was stretched but its UV mesh was not modified accordingly which leads to a stretched appearance of the texture when applied over the model, especially at the top curve. You can modify the UV meshes using the Texture Co-ordinate editor in MS3D or using a better UV map editor such as Lithium Unwrapper.
I see you have made some changes to the handle to and I like the new appearance which makes it look kinda like a wrench over which the blade was fit in.
The default animations are not suitable for this modified skin. There is a lot of clipping where the knife passes through the hand (Ouch!). You can either modify the default anims to remove the clipping or better yet, use the CZDS machete's anims which would fit perfectly for this model but you will need to convert them to 1.6 arms which is actually an easy task since both share the same skeleton. I could help you in that matter, if you wish.
Finally, you could complete the package by adding a PeeWees and shield version of the knife alongwith proper sprites as well. Also, W knife models are indeed necessary since many maps spawn knife entities alongside player spawns and the knives are clearly visible in air for some time on such maps.
