Well, first you should own a game that uses the SOURCE engine, if you want to map for HL1 or older CS versions, download hammer from the google, if you got SOURCE Engine, open steam, then open your TOOLS tab, and double click Source SDK, SDK stands for Software Development Kit, then launch hammer..
Sorry i'm a bit lazy to make a full tutorial, so i am just going to post a site that can help you alot!
Just search for the tutorial you need, for example creating walls, and do what the tutorial tells you!
High Poly skins has many details in its shape.
High Resolution skins has has larger images applied to its surfaces.
High poly skins often have hi resolution skins.
So look for for the skins marked with "reskins" if you have a weak computer.
Reskins have the same "shape" as the original skins, but other images applied to its surfaces.
