CTF map based on Escher's paintings and wood carvings

Title : CTF Escher Haus Filename : ctf_escherhaus.bsp Release date : Thursday, June 26 2008 (1:04am) Author : Kyle "[AF]Meelo" Romano Email Address : kromano@shaw.ca Other Files By Author : de_kneedeep Description : Capture The Flag map inspired by Escher's paintings and wood carvings. Not as Escheresque as I would have liked, but successful nonetheless. Additional Credits to : The folks from CG Society (www.cgtalk.com) and the good people from Best In Class (BIC).
* What is included * Intro Movie : media/ctf_escherhaus.bik < Special Thanks to all the kind folks at CG Society (www.cgtalk.com) who helped me playtest this map from start to finish. It's thanks to their feedback that I was able to complete it. Further thanks to BIC Conker and the rest of his crew, they sure filled up the server when we needed a full house to abuse this map for bugs. CTF Escherhaus supports up to 32 players in a mind warping perspective. You'll go nuts trying to defend that intel... Just as nuts as you'll go trying to capture it. If you have any feedback or comments, please feel free to contact me via email, kromano@shaw.ca

Pros: It's such a great idea! Textures, design, effects, they're all awesome! It just looks like the Escher paintings. Improvements: Make more obstacles, just like nubblecakes said.

Pros: Eschar is a very inspiring artist, and the fact that you based a map on his work is instant attention from me. The overall abstract atmosphere has been achieved. When I look at the building in the canyon, it definitely reminds me of Eschar's work, and that's definitely a good thing. Cons: Now, apart from the greatness of this, there's also a few flaws. The ceiling, where players actually walk, is rather plain. Just flat with lights. Maybe some more ceiling pipes to pose as obstacles. I see in one of the shots that you do have a vent and pipe system running along the ceiling, providing excellent cover, but I think there should be more of that. Bring some of the detail on the floor down to the ceiling (or should I say up? It's a mystery). It seems you've incorporated only upside down rooms. In Eschar's work, he incorporated sideways staircases as well. I think if you could find a way to blend in a sideways room in the building, then it would add to the abstract atmosphere. The upside down look was achieved very well, I just think you should get some sideways going. The lighting. Although it IS realistic, I think that you should have done maybe some spot lights to truly mix things up. Having spotlights point in different directions according to their position (and what surface they're on) would give players a sense of what is where, and really define that "Ok this is upside down, and this isn't." Although in Eschar's work, the idea I had in mind of his intentions was to make it confusing, yet accurate. In TF2, this could leave players oblivious and could interfere with gameplay. Improvements: Even out the detail between the floor and ceiling, add some defining light, and maybe add some more Eschar to it. That's about it. It's a great map nonetheless. Notes: It's truly a work of art, and I hope to god Valve acknowledges this and the community as well and this is included in the next big TF2 update.

Posted by SHADOW- KILLER Known Bugs : Sometimes I get hungry and I don't know why. LMFAO that hilarious nice map, but are the first too screens upside down? or is the map made like that?
Everything in the screens is exactly as it was intended to be. If you're confused, good. That's generally what I aim for. Check out Escher's "Relativity" and "Ascending and Descending" and you should have an idea of what I was aiming for.

Design: I have to say, I am extremely impressed with this map. I never dreamed anyone would be creative enough to do an Escher map for any game. You've managed to capture all the most delightful aspects of Escher's designs (inverted world, and nauseating views) and incorporated them almost flawlessly into TF2. Fun: I have to say, playing on this map is very disorienting, and playing with Spies is even worse. But despite the headaches and knife wounds in my back, I don't think I've ever had as much fun playing a TF2 map as I have had playing this one. Gameplay: There are some problems with the upside down doorways. It's a little hard to get through them because naturally, there is a doorframe one must walk over. It's really the only kink I've found, and it's pretty simple to fix. Chillywi mentioned this. Looks: The presence of some boards and corrugated tin doesn't seem to flow well with the map. Their looks don't fit the whole theme well, but they do help gameplay, so it balances out a little bit. The checkered floor tiles is also another thing that seems out of place, but as it's what Escher used, I don't see any alternatives. Overall, this is absolutely a fantastic map. Well done. You've created a masterpiece.

Wow. Incredible map so far. It was quite fun to play. I have 2 minor complaints: 1. The sideways doorways need a clip brush at the bottom so it's easier to walk through them without getting hung up. 2. The upper sections between the bases is a bit confusing and as a result people don't use them that much. I think it'd help a lot if they were simplified a bit. Other than that, great work. :)
