This is the final change. It was hard to push me through it, but this was a long promised improvement that I couldn't just leave undone. My free time for the surf community has come to an end, if you really want other changes, please read the 'Future' section on the description page of the map.

Your favourite greatriver map, with a 2015 refurbished coat!





2015 was a great year for Source, which is why I decided at that time to redesign one of the most popular surf maps of all times: surf_greatriver (by Black). There are a few reasons why I felt this remake was necessary:

1. The original map lacked many aestethic appeal. I decided to give it my abstract, freeminded design with a modern coat to it.

2. Nearly All ports have been more or less unsuccesful. Some that are succesful are still riddled with water problems and lighting errors.

3. I have always wanted to remake a map, preferably a surf map in order to boost and support the surf community on Global Offensive. With that said, the last update to this map signed the end of my personal free input and time for the surf community.




Greatriver 2015 tries to simulate a (sc)ion-like, futuristic feeling in an otherwise wordly setting, taking into account the name it bears by the inclusion of rivers and the wide open sea as skybox. I wanted to respect nearly everything of the original greatriver in terms of technicals and movement, so I didn't went crazy in renewing the ramps completely or adding new gimmicks or things that would derive from the original gameplay.

Changes as of v1_1:

  • Fixed ramp bugs (100% failproof).
  • Fixed jail door conflicts with buttons and animation.
  • Fixed teleport bug that would randomly teleport to top of garage.
  • Added respawnable weapons. Only those with an effect under them are respawnable. Anti pickup-and-drop system implemented.
  • Added waterfall particles. Will only work on servers who have a precacher plugin.
  • Improved overall lighting, cubemapping, textures and some models. HDR tonemapping now available.
  • Improved optimization slightly.

Some permanent changes in general:

  • Removed 'Undershotty'. There used to be space under the platform with shotguns (in front of both spawns) where you could fly through. For trick servers this is more or less detrimental, but I decided to keep it this way. My version will most likely never be used for tricks anyways, instead focussing on combat.
  • Removed jail lasers and grenade room. Both were gimmicks that were added by xDre4m (I think?) as some sort of 'secrets', but they would favor only the ones with the knowledge and spoil the fun for others. To focus on skill-based surf, these have been removed. In addition, the naderoom caused some uproar because it would forcibly teleport the entire playerbase there for a quick, and ultimately boring RNG fight that had nothing to do with surf.
  • Removed all clan advertisements and jail credits. Credits are now mentioned on the billboard in front of playerspawns, in the room under CT ramp, and at the bottom platform.




This maps' latest improvements and suggestions from other players have now been included. I cooperated with a professional surf player whilst designing the new version, but that shouldn't keep anyone from going forward and voicing their opinions. Any future changes are, as of the latest update, unlikely to happen. Should you (client or clan) wish to see some significant changes, then I'm open for discussion.

Should a clan wish to have his/her own version of surf_greatriver_2015, then please contact me. No derivates are allowed to be made. Ports are also not allowed, I will be porting the map myself to CS:S, in which case it will have its own page.

    The final changes have been added, after almost 2 years. For those who did still enjoy and/or played this map, you can now enjoy a bug-free version of surf_greatriver_2015.

    I personally never got into Surf, so the value of my feedback is limited. But the map looks really great. My son (who loves Surf) was pretty blown away. This was one of his favorite levels and he loves your version Joris! Bravo!

    You might want to retake a look at the map. First of all, about the delay on the buttons and the sounds, I completely agree. I haven't yet played around with those, mainly because I'm having a problem with sounds in the level editor I'm using.

    However, there are a few things that are clearly wrong in your critique, most of them which I don't really understand how they're possible:

    - Weapon have never respawned, not on the original map nor on mine. All I did was ramp up the playerslots to 64, because people asked for it. If you felt like weapons always respawned, it's because server plugins did so. Some weapons trigger things, so picking them up multiple times would be impossible to do in the editor itself.

    - Secondly, I have no admin room yet. I cannot understand how you 'critique' this part of the map when it's not even in there.

    - Thirdly, I was warned multiple times by people that I shouldn't change too much on the original one. This is a remake, not a new version. I had little knowledge about trick servers until I realised there are hundreds of little tricks that, if you change anything major to the map, you're demolishing all those things. That's why I haven't added new boosters or teleports. In fact, I removed a lot of things based off opinions of the majority of surf players, so things like the nade room and the lasers in jail are gone.

    Finally, while I do really appreciate constructive feedback, I would like it to be reflected into the correct scores. You're giving the map a single positive feedback on it's new design and textures, ask for them, and THEN you rate the design of the map a 4/10 xD that makes no sense to me.

    EDIT: Well depending on terminology, looks and design is probably the same, so I guess it doesn't really matter, my bad. I'm assuming with design you're meaning the map itself, which is still odd, because it's a remake (like the design is not mine originally) xD but ok, I understand.

    Regardless, trying to stay sportive on my side, I will take your feedback in mind about the sounds, which are listed for the next update.
