"Heads up folks, we're heading back to the looong time ago abandoned testing area. They're a wreck, but still functional. Theres just nothing more better than a smell of a good ol' fresh air! So breath as long as you can, this opportunity won't happen twice." - Cave J.
Repeat is a short single chamber level using polarity as its testing element set on Overgrown and Destroyed Aperture -theme.
Overgrowth maps from Portal 2 were my favorite part and once I spotted the theme in this map, I couldn’t resist playtesting it and I’m glad I did.
The level is built with quality in mind featuring warm ambient light, adequate details (foliage, particles, derelict textures…) and can be easily taken for an official map. Well done.
The soundtrack serves as a nice background while playing without getting irritating or disorienting.
The puzzle is slightly on the hard side and is not spottable from the first scratch of the head :) but also not too damn hard & frustrating. It took me somewhere between 5 to 10 minutes since I plan ahead the puzzle sequence in my head before starting to place portals and move forward with the puzzle mechanism.
I noticed the lack of dialogue and sounds of Glados. I believe scattering some Glados monologue lines to tease the player along the progression of the puzzle would spice things up a bit.
The map is short and consists of 1 big test room. I sure hope this is a first in a series to come. Definitely design sequels (part 2, 3...) for this map to form a playable sequential campaign. It kept me wanting more.
A nice quality level, albeit a short one, that deserves an extension into a full campaign.
