A Map for Counter-Strike: Source

Forbidden Ways Reloaded - The continuation of the series in a final release, after one year of development! More than twenty new secrets, longer surf, new ways, beautiful ambience and effects.

Hello everyone,
I'm proud to finally present my newest creation 'Surf\_Forbidden\_Ways\_Reloaded'. This map has been one of the longest projects I've had so far. More than two years have passed, since my friend JackTheStripper had the idea to remake this map and gave me some ideas. In those two years I've optimized the map in every aspect. The map has been re-created from scratch and has many new ways - but still the basic idea of Forbidden Ways:
With more than twenty secrets to explore - some harder, some easier - and the typical 'Get a gun, surf to jail' principle, you'll have HOURS of varied gameplay. The far you surf, the better weapons you get, but if you fail, you'll end up being in jail.

Information:

  • More than twenty secrets to discover.
  • Beautiful redesign and awesome ambience.
  • More than 3.5 minutes of total surfing-time.
  • Teamplay map: Some places are only reachable with the help of one of your teammates.
  • Advanced gameplay: Some parts of the map will change from time to time. Get advantages by using secret ways and special weapons.
  • Balanced complexity of the surfing parts for beginners and experts.
  • Now there is a way to get out of jail without any help.
  • Optimized for Mods (such as RPG and DM).
  • I've been 0.7% below max_planes, so please note how difficult it was to add details.
-Krusty

Dear noclippers and spectators,
I have spent a lot of time to make this map as entertaining as possible by creating all the secrets for you to figure out. So please don't spoil it and find them without tricks

Wow! let me try for a review tho I'm not a mapper so I'll have to talk about gameplay first. Well, I'm not really a surf map player so I fall on my first jump. The thing I knew I was teleported and jailed. I'm raging for a gunfight and I have to wait long what to do. Its the opposite of a gungame. I mean just for the most a usual kill and die per round game would be fun for me. So anyway as a surf map its a good one but one thing makes this different from the regular map is the 'convergence'. This is that point where players fight there way and must be given importance. It has to have good design, lots to play around, and fair in tactical terms. So I'm pointing out including not the surfing maps. In a surf map its almost the same factors to consider and that depends on your layout. In that 'convergence' you always expect enemies so no matter how odd or blank that area its still good to explore because the thrill is always there and you're attention is being focused to the environment. Anyway I assume its already understandable so now I'll go to the graphics. Well, at first it was that brown wall, I mean its not seamless. How about importing textures from half-life2?.. because its a tunnel map anyway. Its kinda sci-fi surfing/teleporting so other repeated textures aren't much a big deal. So how about putting plants with vase?...interior design? yes.. blah<3..or that glowing swirling thing to break that monotony. If theres a way to change it, the better as always for developments sake. So thats it, I hope that helps. Anyway, my first review was a map simply because I also like mapping, building,.., into CS:S. So good luck hoping for another version.
    .. was the Temple.

Looks pretty good actually, but can still receive some enhancements. I really like the general layout of it, with pretty long ways but also so much challenging that makes it pretty difficult at many times, specially in that part that you mentioned which is about minutes of unending surfing. Texturing is decent, I like how detailed they are, and also how attractive they do look. However, I have to agree with Nitekillr, you used one texture everywhere, it is always the same for the ramps, the glasses and the background, and taking into account that those are the great majority of things that are on the map, it becomes annoying after playing it plenty of times, what you should do is to make some variations by using other textures that have a similar looking, for example placing ones with different types of rocks with different tone and different aspect/shape to at least make some of the areas look different with each other, on another note, the glass texture you used is a bit undetailed too. I don't really hate that brown color running all over the map, it's just it's repetitiveness what bothers me; every area has the same theme, with no notable changes with respect to others that makes me think that I'm going in circles. In other terms the texture still improves the map's construction and gives it a good ambience for a surfing map, although I would suggest trying to apply the suggestion I left before. Ending the jail is also plainly gray which makes it loss appeal, and even the the sun effect can't help to make it look alive. The designing is quite special, it has plenty of extras and fun but also lots and lots of creativity: More than twenty secrets! Ramps do look pretty well done and don't look squared, I also love how do you make big windows to make the skybox viewable through them, that is a really nice improvement for the map's visuals and looks really refined. Although the creation in some areas makes the difficulty go from beginner to expert, just compare the first parts to the descendant area where there are about three heavy 180 degrees turns and where is very easy to lose, makes it get somewhat unbalanced. Aside from this the overall structure needs a lot of smoothing, it is just enough with looking to the deep corners where the walls turn to the roof, also environments that are meant to be curved are lacking smoothness too. I have also found a bug with your water surfaces at the jail, it seems that if I go back looking to one of them, and then return again it will reflect the world improperly: On the illumitation, looks pretty good because of the sunlight environment you added, nice use you made of that option, it looks delightful and I loved it when I saw the ramp that is between the spawns!
Although I encountered with various light sources that are actually coming out of nowhere:
The reason why the parts that are in the deeps of the map aren't dark, is because of them: It is actually pretty good, although there could be minor bugs. The single-player gameplay (I didn't play online, and bots can't do anything on the level) is pretty challenging and nice as I said earlier. I love how you adapted some of the areas for beginner use while you made another paths for expert surfers, also I like how you made gameplay not look same-sounding in every place (by design), besides that in the lowest point on the map there are many glass floors that are fun to pass through the area by them. Aside from that you included most (Or all, I'm not sure) of the weapons, which is a feature to enjoy, gameplay is just beautiful at least when playing alone for me. Overall, I can't rate, but I would give it a 9.40 in my opinion, there are only issues in the design, like the non-smoothed curves (At exception of the ramps) and the repetitive texturing. However my rating will still stand because of the awesome environments like the evn\_sun and the awesome and detailed skybox. Also a little help to fix the curves would be this tutorial, I recommend following it. Your map is one of the bests of all time I have seen, keep it up!
This needs little to no improvement!

**Pros:** - Skill level - Curves and turns are smooth - Balanced - Neat secrets, I found about 3 of them - Jail isn't a plain room, which is always good - Oh my, dat skybox **Cons:** - Better textures could've been used
    ______________
Overall I would definitely rate this 9.5/10. It isn't boring, but it isn't over complicated which is something I really enjoy with surf maps.

It was always a pet peeve of mine to see one texture tiled everywhere

It's common in a lot of surf maps, yes, but I love it when they have a really elegant design incorporated it to make it both pretty to look at and fun!

The way you added the windows with the really nice skybox truly was a nice touch.

    And these little guys:

No idea what they are and no idea how they are made, but it put a smile on my face seeing it moving around
    __________
I hope my review was sincere, not just for the author but for anyone else checking this map out. Definitely recommend adding it to your surf map collection.

You are amazing! I am one who is very fond of surfing, and this is one of my favorites. Although, when I first played the server, I had no idea who made it. No I can have the opportunity to thank you, I guess. I watched you're trailer, it's so cool! Anyways.. on to the review. **Pros:** - Spawn's shape: unique and cool because of round edges - Secrets: very creative and enjoyable to try to find them - Teleporter sprites: attractive and sophisticated looking - Map size: huge with multiple things to do - Surfing: fun to surf around - Jail: multiple pillars to hide about **Cons:** - Textures: very bland, repetitive, and unattractive to the eye - Rock and glass textures: look awkward - Walls, floors, and ceiling: all the same texture, plain, and boring - Jail: although fun with little amount of people, the jail is small Overall, this map is one of my favorite surf maps.

Well I guess its time to add my 2 cents; It seems like a very well made map, I liked the textures and the layout. I did the area leading to the Deagles fine, However, I couldn't figure out how to get past the first U turn, no matter what I did i could not clear it without falling or losing all my momentum. I eventually gave up after half an hour. I dunno why I couldn't clear it, I had air accelerate to 100 and gravity to 800. I don't say I hate this map for my lack of knowledge with surfing, and I can clearly see you put a lot of effort and time into it.

    > **Posted by .Krusty** > Thank you for the feedback. I really can't figure out why you and Nitekillr are having lightingproblems. Are you playing the CSS:Beta maybe? About the nodraw: since every ramp is made out of many single brushes (blocks), to make them looks smooth, I came really close to the maximum of allowed planes (brush-faces). So I had to put nodraw on as many planes as possible and I decided to use the back and bottom of ramps. Of course, if you fall, you are able to see that for a splitsecond - it's still the easiest way to avoid deleting more parts of thr map. > Thank you for your feedback again! Not much of a lighting problem, just when you go down the left ramp, the light coming from above looks awkward, going from a dark spot to a bright back to a dark one looks weird. I am using CSS, not beta. I understand the problem with the brushes, not that big of a deal, just wanted to point it out. Thanks for the points!

**Pros:** - Nice looking ramps! - The teleporter sprites looks pretty cool. - Nice looking skybox. - The spawn geometry looks pretty cool, I like the clean rounded corners. - HDR. - Secrets. **Cons:** - Lighting transitions seem kind of sudden, bright then suddenly dark. - Rock wall texture seems kind of repetative. - Walls in general looks a little plain. - The nodraws under the ramps are noticeable when you fall. **Improvements:** - Play with lighting a little. - Add displacements or some other kind of geometry to make the walls less boring. - Possibly new glass texture? The texture you are using for glass looks a little weird, looks like a transparent tile and looks a bit weird. - Replace ramps' nodraw textures. **Notes:** - Surf is not really my thing, but I found this one quite enjoyable. - I love the description, very creative. - I also like the screenshots, again, creative and informative. As I said, I am not very good nor do I play surf but I liked this map. Overall, I give it a 8/10, good work.

That light blue texture (which you use for the walls sometimes) is also used for a surf ramp, which can be confusing at times. Also, try using more than just the rock texture for the walls, ceiling, and floor. After a while, it hurt my eyes. For some reason, the lighting was off. Sometimes, it would be bright, but I would walk... maybe, 20 units to the right, and the light would instantly change. > > Try making the jail a little bit bigger. If your map is in some sort of 12v12 match, that jail won't be big enough. I still like the escape route, though. > > That's pretty much all I can say. Other than those, the map is great. > > Hey,
    > i think you mean the light grey texture, which i used for the ramp-borders. I was really limited with details but I see what you mean. I have never heard about the lighting bug you got there, I need some more details about your specs and when exactly that happened (what server?) to help you. > I get the idea behind a bigger jail thought! Thank you for your post. Well, the lighting is a bit hard to explain, but it was on a listen server. Still, this glitch happens to me on very few maps, so I tend to ignore it (and it only happens when I walk, e.g. the jail). I'm sure it's just my specs acting weird. Nothing too important. I'm really nitpicking this map. It's amazing. The ramps are smooth, the gameplay is great, and almost everything about it I love.
