When I found out the existence of the Sonic Generations' very first teaser trailer 3 years ago, I was wondering why SEGA replaced the audio of the teaser with a generic rock song (it's not that bad, but I feel it's quite empty comparing to the teaser trailer)... that's when the restoration effort began.
However, this isn't just a simple replacement, because the video format used in Sonic Generations (and many other SEGA games) is sfd, which is Sofdec by CRI Middleware, and such format is proprietary and tools for it are only available for legit game developers. The idea has since been shelved until a few days ago, when I decided to reach out a friend of mine, Mario Tainaka, who has the license of the SDK from CriWare, to help make my idea becomes reality. Initially we were able to create a playable sfd video file, but we got a lot of
obstacles during the finalization of the mod. And due to the policies of
CriWare with end users, we will keep our progress involving with his
The final step is where my part plays. Thanks to some tricks that I gathered for years from various community sites, especially HCS64, and my own understanding of sfd, I was finally able to create a proper intro mod for Sonic Generations.
This mod may not really be meaningful for most of you, but for us, this was a huge leap of media modding, as we are finally able to understand how the Sofdec format works, which will be very useful in our future projects.
How to use: extract the archive to your game's root directory. Backup the movie file if you need to.
