How to MAKE a skin

Now a lot of the people on fps are always asking how you actually paint the skin, not how to get it ready to paint the skin, HOW TO PAINT THE SKIN.

So I’m going to show you how to do the simplest skin the Baseball Bat.

1. First you need to open up GCFScape and click on open. go to your steamapps/common/team fortress 2/tf folder and in there should be something that says this "tf2\_textures\_dir.vpk" now open up that (Screenshot A)
2. Then go to "root, materials, models, weapons" once there you will select the weapon you want and right click and click extract (screenshot B) in this case it will be v\_bat Then extract it to a memorable place.
3. open the folder from where you saved it go into it and the double click on the one that says your weapon name and is a .VTF file in this case "v\_bat" once in VTFEdit go to file export save it as the same name but as a .TGA file. (Screenshot C)
4. Now the FUN PART open the .TGA in your chosen picture editing program I will be using Photoshop 5. Now you can do whatever you want to it. I am going to add some text. I will also insert a picture from the internet. (Screenshot D)
5. then save it as a .TGA and then open it in VTFEdit and then save it NOT EXPORT, save it as exactly the same name as the.VTF
1. then get the original folder you exported from GCFScape then make sure it has one VTF of the same name in the bat folder, there is also a v\_batphongwrap which has to stay in there when you saved the .VTF, save it into the bat folder and overwrite the original v\_bat.vtf then put the folder v\_bat into here "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\team fortress 2\tf\custom\my\_custom\_skins\materials\models\weapons" where you create folders if they don't exist and then paste the folder into there. (Screenshot E)
6. Then you have to load the game up and play with your newly used skin.

PS My skin is in Screenshot F

Hope This Helps.

Thanks for reading

notes: the thing i need for gcfscape CANT BE FRIKIN INSTALLED ON WINDOWS 10

You can get Source Filmmaker and get access to the vtf files. You can then use vtfedit to export those files, edit them with any photo editor, import them and save them to an edited vtf file.

I figured it out already. Sorry about my lingo.

Due to SteamPipe, you'd probably have to use the tf/custom folder to make a texture (or basically any kind of) mod. If I remember correctly, valve servers have sv_pure set to 2, so your mods won't show up unless you go to an sv_pure 0 server.
