The future holds a lot of action

The Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation (IMC) and Militia are going at it on derelict and worn-torn planets with mech-style walkers called ‘Titans’, free-running ‘Pilots’, grunts and spectres. Will Respawn Entertainment be able to pull off this most anticipated FPS?

Titanfall is the first title of Respawn Entertainment, a company formed by two of Infinity Ward’s co-founder (Infinity Ward, AKA the company that made Call of Duty a franchise). No wonder Titanfall was so anticipated and marketed. Titanfall has definitely borrowed some ideas from previous titles but the fact remains that Respawn pulls off something innovative and fresh. Obviously, the game has its shortcomings but it’s definitely enjoyable enough to be addicting and competitive. Like any other FPS there are two teams: one fighting for good (IMC) and one fighting for bad (Militia). These two go neck to neck on war-torn planets.

Graphics:

Titanfall is fueled by a modified version of the Source game engine, the same engine that are behind Portal 2 and CS: GO. The graphics are decent but not as mind-blowing as were expected out of the engine. A lot of graphically intense games are out and Titanfall is not as much of a competitor to them as you’d expect.

Attrtion on the map:Colony

The disappointment with graphics is not a big deal, it won’t lead you grab your hair and scream ‘WHY THE FUCK DID I EVEN BUY THIS SHIT?’ but the big deal is the fact that it’s a 50GB download. The size will actually make you frown over buying the game (okay, it’s 49.99GB, but it doesn’t really make a difference, does it?). Most places in the world do get super high speed Internet connections and this might not be a problem for them. But people like me who get 1MBPS connection will cry their eyes out while waiting for the download to end. Okay, Respawn needed to give the uncompressed audio to PC users so that low-end machines can also play the game with decent framerates. Why make us download the uncompressed files directly? Why not let us download the compressed files and then uncompress them on our own machine? Jeez.

Weapons and Gameplay:

In Titanfall you go through two types of gameplay at once. One is the free-running ‘Pilots’ and the other is the mech-style walkers ‘Titans’. Pilots are humans in suits and a small but powerful jetpack (yes, I said jetpack), which give the pilot more mobility than most other FPS games. You can wall run, double jump and wall run again and then double jump some more to wall run again. Crazy, right? As a pilot you are not limited to anywhere on the map. Most places are easy to reach but require planning as to how to get to those places the quickest and unseen. This is where all the fun lies. Titans are like the transformers only they are not able to transform into a vehicle (although that would have been uber-cool!). They are heavy mech-style walkers packing some heavy artillery. Apart from Pilots and Titans, there are grunts and spectres which are AI controlled and handled by Microsoft cloud computing. This lessens the load on the hardware and allows for better visuals and graphics. Grunts and spectres are bots to make things lively and fill up the map, great for newbies who can actually contribute to the game by killing bots (or minions, as they are called in the game) and, hence, not be demotivated whilst playing with veterans.

Both Pilots and Titans are equally balanced in terms of weaponry, so don’t think that Pilots cannot withstand a battle against Titans. Pilots are equipped with three weapon slots: primary weapon, secondary weapon and anti-titan weapon (yes, a special weapon just to blast the heck out of Titans). Titans are also not able to go anywhere and everywhere like the Pilots can. With mobility and the added cloak ability (if you choose so) you can jump on a Titan and rodeo them. Yes rodeo: you hop on like a cowboy and blast their internal circuits. The cloak ability is one of the several Tactical Abilities that are eventually unlocked as you progress through the levels. Pilots also carry grenades and two types of kits which gives you different advantages such as long-lasting parkour kit, quick reload kit, etc. With all of these abilities, it would seem that Pilots are now the overpowered ones; but think again. Titans are not as slow and inflexible as they seem. They have the ability to Dash, with different two dashes available to you that keep recharging as you use them (you unlock more dashes as you progress). Titans carry one heavy weapon which helps kill other Titans and Pilots. Titans also have tactical abilities, one of which renders a Pilot’s rodeo useless. This ability, Electric Smoke, deploys dense electrically charged smoke around you and damages nearby Titans and Pilots, which instantly kills a Pilot using rodeo on you. Titans also have different types of rockets which they can use on enemies. And, Titans have two kits as well just like Pilots two kits only with different abilities. On top of all of this, Titans can literally step on Pilots, Grunts and Spectres to kill them. Most weapons available for both groups have been seen before in previous games. However, one weapon known as the Smart Pistol, is a great innovation by Respawn to help newbies into the arena and can also be used by a veteran for easy kills. The pistol automatically locks on to targets and, in one click, fires at multiple targets that are locked on.

Using the Smart Pistol to lock onto 4 grunts in the training simulation

Obviously, the weapon is too powerful to not be balanced and hence to lock on to a target, the target or your aim must be stable and close. Targets that are too far cannot be locked on to. To kill a Grunt or Spectre only one lock is required, but to kill a Pilot three locks are required.

Story:

If you’re expecting Infinity Ward’s co-founders to bring about a great storyline for this game, please STAHP. Storyline is the most disappointing part of Titanfall as there is none (well not technically). Only place where Respawn failed on their innovations is the storyline. They try to innovate storytelling by executing it in some multiplayer matches. That’s not the worst part; the worst part is that two types of Titan chassis can be unlocked only by going through the campaign. So, if you want to play classic matches with proper customized Titans you’re going to have to go through the campaign. Trust me when I say you won’t even be able to focus on the storyline. Consider getting your hands on, for the very first time, a free-running Pilot. All you’ll be doing is flying high, quite literally jumping and wall running around to reach the sky. The good part about the so-called campaign matches is that they’re newbie-friendly (as veterans prefer to play classic matches). You can set your hands on the new experience of handling a Pilot and a Titan all by yourself. Once you’re warmed up with this new experience and you've unlocked the Titan chassis you can move on to classic matches and rock your custom Pilots and Titans.

Multiplayer and Maps:

Perhaps the key ingredients of a multiplayer game are its game modes. And, this part is exactly where all the innovation from Respawn stops. Titanfalls game modes are exactly the same old pale game modes with new maps to fit the game. The classic multiplayer matches include the following game modes:

  1. Attrition: basically a team deathmatch.
  2. Last Titan Standing: classic counter Strike 5v5 CLAN match, only difference is it’s with Titans and it’s a 6v6.
  3. Hardpoint: capture and hold three points.
  4. Capture the flag: need I explain?
  5. Pilot Hunter: team deathmatch but only killing Pilots count on the score board.

All these game modes, except for Last Titan Standing, have one new addition to them – the epilogue. It’s a fairly brilliant idea: at the end of each match, after a team has been defeated, the epilogue kicks in. If for example IMC loses and Militia wins, the epilogue is that an evacuation ship will arrive for the losing team (IMC) and the players must reach it and avoid its destruction to avoid further humiliation. And the winning team can further humiliate the losing team by denying them evacuation by either killing them all or destroying the ship itself. So, even after the match has ended, it really hasn’t. Everyone is given a second chance. What troubles me the most are not the game modes, which we’ve been playing them for years and can handle them for another few. What troubles me about Titanfall is the matchmaking. It is pure speed and no quality. Sure you get your matches faster but at what price? There’s no skill or level based matchmaking at all. I was level 7 playing from IMC with 3 other minus-10 levelers and two 30-40 levelers against five plus-40 levelers and one 8 leveler. Sure, I got the match fast but what am I going to do with a bunch of other newbies against veterans? Cry like a baby? Respawn says their recent patch has fixed the issue but it’s far from fixed. Respawn’s recent update has also brought about the much awaited private matches in beta stage. I still can’t believe they let out a multiplayer game without the ability to create a private lobby. Anyways, the update is out and now you can create a lobby just for your friends if that’s your thing. Another key ingredient of multiplayer FPS are the maps. I mean who in their right mind would play the game if the maps are really shit? Seeing the diversity of Titanfall, I say Respawn has done an amazing work. Though, less in quantity, the maps quality are utterly brilliant. They are well balanced for both the team and for Pilots and Titans. The fact that some buildings are so huge that even Titans can enter them is really amazing. Everything is perfectly spaced so as to give Titans space to move and Pilots space to parkour.

Titanfall combines already established ideas into a well-balanced multiplayer. It is very addiciting and fun despite bad match making and an almost-irrelevant campaign mode.

    > The audio wouldn't be so badly bloated if you didn't need to download ALL the languages. Not just english, or wherver you're from.

The bloating is mainly because the sound files aren't compressed. Although I do agree that having to install audio files for every language is a bit of a nuisance, it would be far less bloated to begin with if they had actually compressed the sound files. I actually extracted the English audio files JUST for the sake of seeing why the game has 30 GB of its data comprised of sound files, and the reason is that NONE of the sounds were compressed.
Not as serious as you'd think.

I'm wondering if 50Gb would meet up its need for the graphics and gameplay improvement compared to a lesser amount of disk space.. telling us to buy another hardisk in order to play this seems to be the trend & then that'll make my PC hang all the time.

I somewhat agree on everything but not the 50GB.

For me, regardless of speed of internet connection, 50GB is a terrible aspect of the game as there's not a single justification to allow uncompressed files in any way on a computer. Can't they just compress the files all together and keep it that way to make a 50GB something like 15? I mean, it's SOUNDS we're talking about. Sounds shouldn't take endless amounts of gigabytes because the dev team was too lazy to compress them.

Their argument of saying that it makes the game run better, is TOTAL CRAP.

Aaaand, yes, I didn't buy the game exactly because of that (and also a bit because of Origin xD) but yea. I really considered buying it when I found an article saying it has over 50GB. I really don't understand how this couldn't bother someone, but apparantly a lot of people don't care. I have 12TB, and in no way do I allow a simple game like any other to have over half of the actually required filesize.

    >

Maybe you're right about the good and bad but I couldn't quite focus on the storyline hence I went with what I felt was the good and bad.

    > Different titan types (there are three) have different stats, including how many dashes, so they do not increase as you progress, but rather based on which titan type you have.
    >

Yes I know the dashes depend on which Titan Chassis you are using but those chassis unlock as you progress through the campaign.I should have elaborated a little more.

    > The smart pistol is the CoD 4 / MW2 Nade launcher and directly transforms from N00b-t00b to N00b-Gun.
    > Nobody using this weapon is a "veteran" by any definition. Specters also require two locks, so it is a linear progression. (except amped weapons)
    >

I did say 'CAN also be used by a veteran for easy kills'.IMHO, I felt with the Run N Gun kit and the smart pistol, some easy kills can be obtained effortlessly.

    > The story is pretty much just a linear series of attrition (team deathmatch + minion kills) and hard-point domination matches. The disappointing part isn't the story itself (which is there, just hidden behind lots of actual gameplay, Yahtzee has a good point about this), but that the outcome of your matches does not even affect the story. You might be playing Militia, win by a crushing amount only hear "We got our asses handed to us." by the exposition. Felt really strange when my team only lost 1 match and crushed the IMC on the other matches, only to have the story be that we are loosing for a sec.
    >

I didn't say the story didn't exist.I said you wouldn't be able to focus on it at all.You do have a good point that the worst part is that winning or losing has no impact on the storyline. But, IMHO, the fact that you have to go through it to unlock Titan's chassis is just crazy. It's like respawn is trying to say 'Listen, bro I know the storyline is boring as fuck and very badly executed on our part but please just go through it once? We've spent so much time on it.'

    > Attrition is NOT basically TDM, it is Team WAR (Deathmatch including minions as score), while Pilot Hunter is more alike the regular TDM with minions around that you can kill if you please.
    >

    You can call it that.

    >
    > Last Titan Standing is a newer twist on a elimination/last man standing type gamemode, where you only have to kill off the enemies Titans, not the players themselves. And it is NOT a CLAN match.
    >

    -Round based

-Only Respawn at the beginning of the round

-Round won by the team who has the last titan/titans standing.

    -time limit

Sound like a CLAN match to me. Only difference, as I've mentioned, is it's with Titans and you don't have to plant C4.

    > Hard-Point domination is Domination, pure and simple.
    > CTF is CTF, yes.
    >
    > And the author forgot to mention VARIETY PACK, which allows you to play varieties of the gamemodes in the same lobby.
    >

Left it out on purpose as it included the same five game modes that I've mentioned.

    > The author points out that matchmaking has to rank detection system that puts you on "equal" ranked plays with "equal" skill, but the point of Titanfall is not the rank. Rank is just your progress to the next "level", and has no other bonus than a chip in your name and some XP boost. Just because someone is Gen 10 lvl 50 does not mean he is by any means a veteran. I was kicking Gen 6-8 arse by Gen 0 (start), so that point is invalid in my opinion. And by far the R101C Carbine (lvl rifle weapon) is the best weapon in the game by my account.
    >

The point of any game, let alone Titanfall, is not the rank. I totally agree with that point. But there should have been some sort of skill-based matchmaking available. Think about all the newbies that join the game, it is really hard on them. Plus, pros should play with pros to excel their game further more. If pros are playing with noobs and noobs are playing with pros then only the noobs can gain from it, provided they are very patient, tolerant and can observe carefully.
And, I feel the same about Carbine.

    > So, those are my critics about this review and general opinions about the game.
    >

And critics are always welcome :). I hope I was able to clear as much. If I still have any mistakes I apologize, I will be more careful next time.

I think the reviewer got his good and bad wrong, but due to the way the story is so poorly told, I shall forgive you.

The IMC are like the Alliance from Firefly. Not particularly good and has alot of secrets. Which includes experiments to make mechanized warriors (specters) to control the population.
Militia are the Independence from said series, the ones fighting the oppression even though called Terrorists.
Militia are the good ones from my PoV.

Different titan types (there are three) have different stats, including how many dashes, so they do not increase as you progress, but rather based on which titan type you have.

Furthermore, the electric smoke does NOT instakill a pilot, but does heavy Damage-over-time. However, for a smaller titan (Stryder) using an LMG with slammer would still doom a titan before the smoke can end you. Stim also helps.

The smart pistol is the CoD 4 / MW2 Nade launcher and directly transforms from N00b-t00b to N00b-Gun.
Nobody using this weapon is a "veteran" by any definition. Specters also require two locks, so it is a linear progression. (except amped weapons)

It's a proper multiplayer, well, sort of... It's like CRYSIS, CoD, BF, and a little Attack on Titan Tribute Game in ONE.
