Achievement Idle Spytech - 2012 Revamp

A complete overhaul of the first (and only) map that I've ever publicly released.

About this map project Believe it or not, this is the 2nd TF2 map project that I've got on the go. The other map project I'm working on (and you may have already seen this project submission) is my conversion of ctf_2fort into an achievement/idle map, which I have nicknamed "achievement_idle_2fort".

Onto this project. Roughly 1 year ago I had uploaded the first TF2 map that I've ever uploaded (though it's not the first map I've ever made), which you may have seen. That map was achievement_idle_spytech. Spytech was essentially my version of the achievement_idle_funbox_b1/b2/b3 map(s). I had fixed a number of issues that I had seen in the map, mostly texturing issues (making sure all textures in the map were from TF2).

However, I released Spytech in essentially an "unfinished" state. Though the map was functional, I had gotten lazy during the creation process and gave up on adding numerous features that I had planned out, such as:

  • Two rooms containing buttons you could shoot/+use to spawn Level 1/2/3 Sentry Guns/Dispensers/Teleporter Entrances & Exits, one room for RED with BLU buildings, and the other room for BLU with RED buildings, useful for players who need "destroy x amount of buildings" achievements
  • The linkage of the 6 sound-playing buttons in the "secret" admin room, to the loudspeakers seen in various places on the map. I ended up just making them play completely random sounds, instead of warning-style sounds, which was my original intention. It was meant to be something the admins could do to scare players with a sudden loud noise.
  • The addition of nobuild zones to certain areas such as the center area between the spawn rooms, the tunnels under the map, and the bridge down in the pit area.
  • Team-based activation filters for the various spawnroom doors located around the map. Players from the other team can open the other teams doors (though they can't actually go into the other teams base). Because they can make the doors open, I noticed a lot of spawncamping occurring at the doors when I ran the map on my servers.


  • ...And many more things. A couple of months ago (between January - March 2012) I was planning out a revamp of Spytech, and I had started a fair amount of work on the revamp, but I soon gave up on it and deleted the VMF file of all the revamp work I did. I didn't actually plan to ever start working on revamping Spytech, but lately I've felt the need to get back into mapping...

    So that's why this project is here. I've already begun working on revamping Spytech, so I'll just jump right into the changes I've already made, and the things I have planned. NOTE: The screenshot I uploaded is an overview of the original achievement_idle_spytech map, as I have not completed enough work on the revamp of achievement_idle_spytech to create a screenshot of it. Once I've done a bit more work, I'll upload screenshots of the revamp.
    Changes I've Made
  • Removed all hallways. Upon exiting the spawn room, you'll be in a teleport room which will house various teleports to various areas in the map, such as The Pit (where you can kill idlers) and various achievement rooms which will be fully equipped with various map features to assist you in earning achievements (such as low ledges for scouts to crouch under and do double jumps for that achievement, and also a long hallway you can stand in which will push you to the end of the hallway into a teleport which teleports you back to the start of the hallway, for the "run x amount of distance" achievement for Scouts)
  • A hugely restructured pit area. Trust me, I'm changing a shit-ton of stuff in the pit area. Things will be very different, my friends.
  • 3D Skybox! This map will feature the first 3D skybox I've ever made. The Pit will be the recipient of the 3D skybox. Instead of walls and a ceiling in the pit area where you kill idlers, there will be a 3D skybox so you have a view of the sky, and instead of walls, I'll be looking into creating a high fence-type structure so you can also see the 3D skybox. It'll be an outdoor pit!
  • Secret areas! I've got an idea or two on how to set up access to the secret areas, such as Goldeneye 007 (N64)-Facility-level-bathroom-vents, except they'd be wall vents and you'd be able to crouch-walk into the vents. Certain vents will teleport you to hidden areas. Other vents will lead you to a brief fall down the vent, ending in your death.

      I will once I do a bit more work on the map. Right now I'm just doing structural stuff, getting the foundation of the spawn rooms and the pit area set up. Actually, more precisely, I'm working on a 3D skybox for the Pit Area.

      Once I finish the structural work of the Pit Area, I'll take a screenshot or two just so you can get a general feel for how the new Pit area will function.
