Source SDK is free

Source SDK is free

Following the free to play release of TF2, Source SDK has been accidentally released free, and will remain that way.

This news comes a little late, but for those unaware due to the recent release of a free Team Fortress 2, the Source SDK will soon become free to use in its entirety, for everyone (confirmed by Valve's Robin Walker in this RockPaperShotgun article). The free SDK was first uncovered in Moddb's forums on the 28th of June by an enterprising young man going by the name of Riley, who just happens to be the playtest leader of esteemed Source mods Zombie Panic: Source and No More Room In Hell.

This means that all Source mods, made for Valve games (we list around 1,500 for HL2 alone) may eventually be free to play, without requiring you to purchase a Valve game (thou who hasn't purchased a valve game on this site?)

"Yep. That said, your email has triggered a process here that made us re-examine that, and we’re going to just go ahead and make the Source SDK freely available. Thanks for making us better!" Says Robin Walker.

When RockPaperShotgun emailed Walker for further confirmation, and he went on to explain:

We are in the process of getting it all done. It’s a bit messy because we have multiple versions of the SDK, and there’s some dependencies we need to shake out. But yes, the gist of it is that we’re just going to go ahead and make the Source SDK freely available.

But... I thought Source SDK was free after all :|. It's alot like a rumor being spread, because I got Source SDK a year ago. Yeah, just TF2 was supposed to be free since all the tools on Steam are free :)

Meanwhile, DICE says they won't release BF3 mod tools at all because "the engine is complicated" and too difficult for our precious little modders 0_o

    Well, maybe the bread. Maybe.

Actually... HL2:Ep3, is canceled. You won't see a game with a name like this. But they said there will be Half Life 3 !

Posted by UNREA1 Ha, funny. But since you have TeamFortress which is powered by Source engine, shouldn't you be able to play those mods anyway?

Not really, I don't thin TF2 has ALL HL2 resources that Source Mods need. I mean, why would TF2 have the model of a combine soldier? etc

Believe it or not (check in the sdk model viewer) tf2 does actually have that stuff. Also not all mods need hl2. Some just need the engine.

Posted by DoctorWaffles It was free? Altough for people ATI / NVIDIA GPU's. (HL2:DM was free with those GPU's, the SDK was integrated)

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hl2DM and Lost coast. Those didn't come with the sdk though, and they wouldn't allow you to get mods.
