GAMES: The Best Of...

Today I was browsing around and thought I would see what everyone's thoughts are on the "Best of.." list for the past decade and some i have viewed for all time. I don't really agree with all the results I came up with but there were very interesting as the games range from Consoles to PC's. For starters, IGN (Gamespy) has chosen this list of "Top Games of the 2000's":

Top 25

  1. Tropico 3
  2. Europa Universalis III
  3. Thief II: The Metal Age
  4. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II
  5. Battlefield 2
  6. Sins of a Solar Empire
  7. Rise of Nations
  8. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
  9. IL-2 Sturmovik
  10. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  11. Battlefield 1942
  12. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
  13. Plants vs. Zombies
  14. Call of Duty
  15. Left 4 Dead
  16. Half-Life 2
  17. Team Fortress 2
  18. Portal
  19. Diablo II
  20. Counter-Strike
  21. Sid Meier's Civilization IV
  22. Company of Heroes
  23. Deus Ex
  24. BioShock
  25. World of Warcraft

They have an article on each game that I picked through and read on the games that I actually play and care about (maybe 8 of those on the list). I am not saying that each on of these are NOT great games, but as I said, I don't care for them.

I love seeing top # lists with games I either never heard of or didn't expect to see up soo high.

    1. Computer and Video Games magazine (2001) (I've had to piece this list together through second-hand sources. Please help me fill in the blanks)

Rank Title Publisher Year 1 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Nintendo 1998 2 Super Mario 64 Nintendo 1996 3 ?
    4 ?
5 Goldeneye 007 Rare 1997 6 Super Mario Kart Nintendo 1992 7 Super Mario World Nintendo 1991 8 Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Nintendo 1992 9 Tetris Alexey Pajitnov 1987 10 ?

The specific games mentioned are the ones the authors note as the "bests" of the series.

    1. Nintendorks.com (2000)

Rank Title Publisher Year 1 Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Nintendo 1992 2 Super Mario 64 Nintendo 1996 3 Goldeneye 007 Rare 1997 4 Final Fantasy III (IV) Squaresoft 1994 5 Super Mario Bros. 3 Nintendo 1990 6 Legend of Zelda Nintendo 1986 7 Super Mario Kart Nintendo 1992 8 Super Mario Bros. To keep this list in the style of all the others, I have thus tampered with it, and inserted games from each series which I think they would be statistically most likely to have chosen as the "best" game of each franchise.

Note 2: This is Next Generation''s second list. They also made a list in 1996 (included below).

    1. Electronic Gaming Monthly (1997) issue 100

Rank Title Publisher Year 1 Tetris Alexey Pajitnov 1987 2 Super Mario Bros. 3 Nintendo 1990 3 Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Nintendo 1992 4 Super Mario 64 Nintendo 1996 5 Street Fighter II (Turbo) Capcom 1991 6 Super Metroid Nintendo 1994 7 Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island Nintendo 1995 8 Contra III: The Alien Wars Konami 1992 9 Final Fantasy III (IV) Squaresoft 1994 10 Saturn Bomberman Hudson Soft 1997

    Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo 1985 6 Virtua Fighter 2 Sega 1995 7 Street Fighter II Capcom 1991 8 Lemmings Psygnosis 1990 9 Quake id / GT Interactive 1996 10 Warcraft 2 Blizzard 1995 Note: Number 5 on this list was actually the "Mario series," which was an odd choice, since presumably Super Mario 64 is part of the "Mario series" as well."

    Another list:

Going on over to another list I found rather intriguing was found over at GameSpot where these are a mixture of all kinds of games from console, to PC, to Applets. I do like this list mainly because there are great games on there that are classics that us mid-to-late 20's and early 30's (years of age) grew up on playing on the 'Atari' (ohwee so much fun!). This is what they came up with (and ratings):

Brief list of rated games by GameSpot:

    Super Mario Galaxy 2

GameSpot Score 10 Editors' Choice Release Date: May 23, 2010 The sequel to Super Mario Galaxy features strange new worlds to explore, new challenges to overcome, and Mario's trusty sidekick, Yoshi. Genre: 3D Platformer

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

GameSpot Score 10 Editors' Choice Release Date: Jun 12, 2008 Metal Gear Solid 4 offers even more of the stealth-based action gameplay and grand stories that the series has become known for. Genre: Modern Action Adventure

    Grand Theft Auto IV

GameSpot Score 10 Editors' Choice Release Date: Apr 29, 2008 Grand Theft Auto IV builds on the series' rock solid foundation with an awe inspiring recreation of Liberty City. Genre: Modern Action Adventure

    Grand Theft Auto IV

GameSpot Score 10 Editors' Choice Release Date: Apr 29, 2008 Grand Theft Auto IV builds on the series' rock solid foundation with an awe inspiring recreation of Liberty City. Genre: Modern Action Adventure

    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3

GameSpot Score 10 Editors' Choice Release Date: Oct 28, 2001 Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 strikes a perfect balance between new and old and renders the two previous entries in the series almost completely obsolete in the process. Genre: Skateboarding

    Chrono Cross

GameSpot Score 10 Editors' Choice Release Date: Aug 15, 2000 Chrono Cross may not have had the largest budget, but it has the largest heart. Genre: Role-Playing

    SoulCalibur

GameSpot Score 10 Editors' Choice Release Date: Sep 8, 1999 Think state of the art. Genre: 3D Fighting

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

GameSpot Score 10 Editors' Choice Release Date: Nov 23, 1998 Ocarina of Time definitely follows in the footsteps of the previous games, and the result is a game that can't be called anything other than flawless. Genre: Fantasy Action Adventure

    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

GameSpot Score 9.9 Editors' Choice Release Date: Nov 6, 2000 Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is a must-own Dreamcast game. Genre: Skateboarding

    Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

GameSpot Score 9.9 Editors' Choice Release Date: Sep 20, 2000 As most major publishers' development efforts shift to any number of next-generation platforms, Tony Hawk 2 will likely stand as one of the last truly fantastic games to be released on the PlayStation. Genre: Skateboarding

    NFL 2K1

GameSpot Score 9.9 Editors' Choice Release Date: Sep 7, 2000 In the end, NFL 2K1 is a deeper, more refined version of the original game. Genre: Football Sim

    Perfect Dark

GameSpot Score 9.9 Editors' Choice Release Date: May 22, 2000 As a single-player or multiplayer FPS experience Perfect Dark is unparalleled on the console systems. Genre: Sci-Fi First-Person Shooter

    Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

GameSpot Score 9.9 Editors' Choice Release Date: Apr 30, 1999 It looks like we finally have the "killer app" for the Game Boy Color. Genre: 2D Platformer

    NFL 2K

GameSpot Score 9.9 Editors' Choice Release Date: Sep 9, 1999 With NFL 2K's incredible control, you feel as though you're down on the field with the NFL's finest. Genre: Football Sim

    Tekken 3

GameSpot Score 9.9 Editors' Choice Release Date: Apr 29, 1998 Tekken 3 is the best PlayStation game to come along in a long time.

That's enough for the previews, but I will leave some links for you all to check out. I would like for everyone here to compile their own list and I will get a few polls going to see who, here, thinks which games are the best of the best. I am going to make mine up and will reply! Thanks for the lists and I will get to mine!
