No, they are not, i have a few here, they are made out of aluminium.

I have one here from my time in the military, and ours are made of plastic. Get over yourself.

I do not need to get over myself, I have one here without paint and this is what it looks like. Why would anyone make such a thing out of plastic? it has to be very solid in case it falls down or else it would gets crushes and in worst case break...plus, aluminium is the better material in terms of isolation. either you use VERY cheap canteens in your military or the apinted aluminium feels like palstic for you ;) And in regards of your video, have you ever knocked on painted aluminium? it sounds EXACTLY the same. I dont see why you make such a big deal out of it, i said you should make the base shine throguh, even in your video there are such damage spots on the canteen, why not add them in the texture ? ?

According to Wikipedia, canteens were indeed made of aluminum in the 1900's. Now they're made out of several different types of plastic.

It is looking good I guess, though the texture lacks something spicy, like some scratches, a bit of damage in the paint that makes the metal shine through, some dust maybe. Cant really tell.

Metal? These things are made of plastic.

This would fit as a TF2 canteen skin.

It would also fit as a decent prop for Garry's Mod.

Question though: don't military canteens (both older and more recent versions) usually come with a strap of some sort attached to them to make it easier to carry it around?

Thats not a strap its actually a pieces of plastic that protects the gas mask water supply cover. It's not meant to be a strap but sometimes it is used as that but those style of canteens is mostly phased out.

be the change you want to see

They do, I just didn't bother to model it, although it was planned.

Ah, alright. Well, it looks good either way, so I've got no complaints.
