You should be able to edit them to a name with the same number of characters, and open the .mdl with notepad++ and also change the name that appears in the first line. Changing the length of the name can also be done if you add/remove from the NULLs that appear later in that first line (need to be careful), but it's usually easy enough to just edit the name by one character.
