Treyarch's FAIL opinions about modding

It's one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed

By BigFatObeliX 3 years ago

Right out the mouth of JD_2020, Treyarch's community manager:

You didn't buy an open-source game, nor did we create an open-source game. We didn't have to give out any .map source files with what you purchased. We absolutely will not be releasing the source map files for every map - that's just intellectual property we're not prepared to let fly out there, sorry.

...

No, what you're saying doesn't make sense because you are acting like Treyarch has done something out-of-the-ordinary with our mod tools support (in a bad way), as opposed to doing something that is more than what you're used to in the CoD franchise. Nope, this engine is not the Source engine. It can't be modded in the same ways Half Life 2 can. There are limits to the number of entities you add, yep. That's the engine, and that's the way it has always been in this series. We've released character models, viewmodels, source map files, prefabs, CSV files; tutorials for all of the above. All of this was done in kind, in the waking hours of the morning from developers who volunteered their time and energy to create them for you. Unfortunately, it seems to never be enough.

...

For the record, we are patching the game. Stop making it out like we aren't.

...

Well I'm not going to debate with you - you're just wrong. I know a lot of people think the modding community is what "makes or breaks" the success of a game... But that's not true, and if only you know how far off that is from the truth. But at any rate, that doesn't influence our level of support one way or another, so I guess it's moot anyhow.

I almost... vomited when I saw that last thing. Okay, I can get over them not releasing proper mod tools for CoD:WaW (I for one am not able to mod a thing) but they have just totally made me angry with their statement about the mods. Call of Duty has been always "the game made to be modded" for me, so this feels really awkward. Until now I at least tried to find something positive about Treyarch's policy, but this thing had completely removed that attempt. No more. In my opinion they do not deserve to be a developer of a Call of Duty game (at least for PC). I seriously hope the future CoD's will be made more modder-friendly again (and IW's probably will make it reality).

What do you think about this?

Well this sucks. No mods for WaW.

Yes, that DOES suck, especially because WaW is not the game with the biggest replay value in the world, imo.

Apart from this, even if the mods were present, the redirecting issues practically deny their proper usage. But of course, as they say, they're patching the game. Sad thing is that it takes half a year to fix the most basic errors.

    So double fail.

Hmmm does sound very good on their part but at the end of the day the game is a very good game and imo would not really benefit from modding anyway :\

Also you kind of missuse the word "Fail", a fail is when someone does something that back fires on them or they accidently own themselves. Here all the community manager has done is state his ( or the team's ) opinions on modding. So its hardly a fail, you should be saying its a mad move or unfortunate that he thinks like that.

Wowowoowowoowow. IW always made theirs at least Semimoddable. Look at the multi mods for COD4 and the SP ones for COD2. I say we own their ass.

I think this game was kind of fell short, there wasn't much gameplay to the main story line. It also wasn't very involving or exciting, which isn't something modding can exactly fix.

Pretty useless attitude. No wonder IW hates Treyarch.

If they hated Treyarch they wouldn't let them make the games.

Call Of Duty series is under Activision's (ie the publisher) control, as far as I know IW had little choice in the matter.

I have a question: Can still MP maps be made? Like for CoD 4?

They should atleast make the installation of custom Zombie maps easier. It's a bit annoying to start an extra mod for each map.
