    Blurb

    Get GIMP today!

Get 2.6 instead, it can make GoldSrc textures.
First person to contribute with a tutorial of his own, will stand beside me as leader.

    Plug-ins of interest

    VTF Plug-in

Allows GIMP to read, edit, and save '.vtf' files, using a layer mask as the alpha channel, or a different layer entirely.

    G'Mic

A big set of filters, which function like the 'filter gallery' from Photoshop, with some extra stuff. Also allows you to make your own filters, read here how.

    GIMP normalmap plug-in

Allows for normalmap creation, also allows you to look at a 3D object for preview.

    DDS plug-in

Allows GIMP to read, edit, and save '.dds' files, using layers as mipmaps.

    Layer styles

Allows you to make use of layer styles just like in Photoshop; not all of these are in G'Mic, and even if they were, this is much more accesible. Though it doesn't really function like the way photoshop does it, it can be put in new layers so not all is lost when you mess up.

    Tutorials of interest

These are all on the GameBanana site, but there are many, many more everywhere on the internet (like on pixel2life for example).

    Link

Video tutorial for making a signature.

    Link

Explains how the path tool can be used to modify a selection.

    Link

Simple, but effective, way of making gradient text.

    Link and link

Two easy to follow tutorials for making a signature

    Link

A somewhat overcomplicated way of making a transparent spray.

    Link

Easier, yet outdated, way of making a transparent spray.

    Link

Simple brushed metal tutorial, which I guess doesn't tile, but will probably work well enough for texturing purposes.

    Link

Video tutorial on how to make a buy menu image, though I should remark you get better results if you make the hand invisible by putting '$no_draw 1' in a 'hands.vmt', and use the v_model anyway. Also note that the GIMP has a function that can create an image by selecting a window, or from clipboard.

    Link

Outdated, but functional, tutorial on making a decal.

    Link

Tutorial on making an animated '.gif', can also be used to make a '.vtf' with frames.

    Link

Interesting tutorial on making an animated special effect.

    Link

    Real fake HDR screenshots.

    Link

Simple tutorial on making very simple reskins, this is for newbies only and the results should never ever be submitted; though perhaps in combination with some selection trickery, it could at least be decent.

    Link

    Selfillumination.

    Other nonsense.

    Brushes

    iceytina's GIMP brushes

Metric fuckton of brushes exclusively for GIMP.

    droz928 brush set

A seriously unfunny quantity of brushes for GIMP.

    DeviantArt's GIMP brush collection

    Go nuts.

Hey, I can't get the VTF Plugin to work for Gimp... It works with Photoshop, but not Gimp. I get "The procedure entry point gmallocn could not be located in the dynamic link library libgib-2.0-0.dll."

      Any help?

I just added some more nonsense to the already massive list of assets this page guides to, which is probably going to get bigger whenever, or when someone has something to contribute.

I need help. I made a retex on the default M4A1, but when i tried to import it from JHLMV, It said that i needed to save it as a 256-color bitmap. But it looks so ugly when i did that! Comparing to the other retextures of course they needed to do the same thing. Any help? And another thing is that i cant upload anything to game banana. I need someone trustworthy to upload it for me on my account, or redistribute it. I have uploaded it to http://www.mediafire.com/?pofmnwy5574df3n

I don't think I can help, save for mentioning the option you can make GIMP index the colors you're going to use; which is in 'Image->mode->indexed' and type in '256' in the 'generate optimum palette' prompt. Everything else is pretty much out of my league, and also outside the scope of this club.

I need help - I tried to retex a knife but when i put in red it turns to pink. Any help?

It could be anything, wrong channels, layer blending, transparent brush.

I only use GIMP these days - all the pixel icons and logo etc are done in GIMP. Woohoo to free open source!

And yet your avatar and upic are what they are.

like i want the blood stains to look the same on both teams, do i add a transparent layer?

If you've done it right, the blood stain should be on a different layer; if you have, there's two things you can do: open the BLU version in the red document and place the blood layer over it, or select all of the blood layer, copy, and paste it in the BLU image.

If you go for the first one, you'd have to save it as the BLU version, if you go for the second, you have to position the blood right, so my advice would be the first way.

i don't know how to make symmetrical skins, i have a sniper with blood on him but the red and blue teams have different looking blood patterns, any idea on how to copy a pattern from one team to the other?

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say, what does symmetry have to do with team coloring?
